Pictures of Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis)

A member of the Poppy family, Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) got it's name from the blood red juice of the root.  It is POISONOUS and should never be ingested.  It is used today as a dye and does discolor skin if you are harvesting it.  Decades ago it was used in toothpaste and mouthwashes as a plaque inhibitor.

What kinds of areas can Bloodroot be found in?
Sanguinaria canadensis loves the rich soil and shade of dense woods.  However, it also requires a good amount of moisture so it is usually found in the lower areas of forests that tend to collect small amounts of water.

Are you harvesting (a.k.a wildcrafting)?  Roots

Bloodroot is a difficult herb to catch early in the spring,
you almost need to know where it grows and what to look for.

The flowers often bloom just before the leaves, or emerge with them.

The way this herb got it's name is because it appears to bleed when it's cut.
It was disturbing to me when I first did it - and I knew what to expect.  I can
imagine how people, that didn't know, must have felt.
